Frequently Asked Questions

Who is FPRA’s Professional Liability Coverage for?
FRPA’s law enforcement professional liability protection is beneficial to ALL officers. Civil lawsuits and personal liability for officers’ on-duty actions are quickly becoming an epidemic. The public’s widespread use of smart phones and personal recording devices, as well as law enforcement agencies’ mandatory use of body cameras, tactical cameras, and dash cameras, has created an increasingly toxic anti-law enforcement environment. Several events have spurned distaste and distrust for the entire law enforcement community resulting in officers being hauled into court to defend the split-second decisions they make while in harm’s way protecting the public. There are countless stories throughout the country which illustrate the real risk officers and their families face for losing everything they have worked so hard to obtain and financial hardship that can last a lifetime. FRPA is here to protect officers and their families from financial ruin.
Where is it available?
Right now, our program has been launched and is available for all state and local law enforcement officers in the state of Florida. We are diligently working with our carriers to make this program and its protections available to all state and local law enforcement officers nationwide in the coming months.
What is covered?
FRPA provides insurance protection for officers’ on-duty actions. FRPA’s coverage will be there to protect an officer and his or her family in the event the officer is sued for a claim of improper or excessive force in connection with an on-duty action. Coverage includes situations arising from an arrest, detention, investigation, interrogation, confrontation, or shooting. Any officer covered under FRPA’s program that is accused of any use of force while on-duty – no matter how minor or severe – will have the comfort of knowing that their personal belongings are protected in the event a lawsuit is filed or a civil judgment is obtained related to that use of force. Actions as simple as pepper spray, handcuffs, take-down procedures, and other seemingly innocuous law enforcement protocols have been the subject of thousands of civil suits against officers and their agencies in recent years. Until now, there has been no insurance coverage available to officers that would protect them in the event they are the subject of these legal claims.
What is excluded from coverage?
As with all insurance, there are coverage exclusions. Criminal acts, sexual misconduct, and employment-related claims (such as administrative or disciplinary actions and discrimination) are examples of the exclusions applicable to FRPA’s program offerings. *For the list of specific exclusions, the officer should consult his or her issued policy which contains the terms and conditions of the insurance coverage provided.
How does it work?
In the event an officer is put on notice of a potential lawsuit or is actually sued civilly for an on-duty incident, the officer simply reports the potential claim or filed suit to FRPA and the Insurer. Once the claim is reported, the Insurer will investigate the claim and make a coverage determination. The amount of benefits/coverage available for a covered event depends on the policy limits chosen by the officer.
Why do Law Enforcement Officers need this coverage?
At FRPA, we provide liability insurance protection for individual officers for their on-duty actions. Officers must understand that, while they may be members of a particular union, union benefits do NOT normally provide for the type of personal asset insurance protection for on-duty incidents that FRPA’s coverage has been designed to offer. Our one-of-kind program protects the personal property and assets of officers in the event they are sued in court for an incident that occurred while on-the-job. Our program coverage is available through A+ rated national and international insurance carriers.
How is the premium calculated, and what does it cost?
FRPA’s carriers have agreed to make coverage available to all officers at one set flat-rate price. For the $300,000.00 coverage, the total annual cost of insurance for the year is only $1 per day ($365 annually). Each year, as part of the insurance premium collected, a flat-fee is paid for the officer’s membership with First Responders Risk Purchasing Group, LLC. That fee is built into the total price of the coverage, and will never be billed or collected in addition to any amount paid. Membership in First Responders Risk Purchasing Group, LLC is mandatory, and permits officers to purchase this liability coverage at the flat-rate amounts set forth above. There are additional benefits provided to each officer-member which are associated with this membership and will be provided upon coverage being bound.
How can I pay?
Our coverage is purchased and paid for all online. Once an applicant is approved, a payment link is provided along with the officer’s policy in our Welcome Email. By accessing the link, the officer can set up a payment profile and payment can be made in lump-sum, or payments can be made in up to ten (10) monthly installments following an initial down payment.
